Local cooking show goes national

The Art of Food with Wendy Brodie, featuring the Monterey Peninsula-based chef/caterer/cooking teacher and former owner of Lincoln Court restaurant in Carmel, CA, is being distributed by American Public Television under a three-year deal. Boston-based APT has been a long-time major supplier of public-television programming, including cooking shows such as Julia Child's The French Chef.

The Art of Food with Wendy Brodie has been seen on a Fox affIliate in the Central Coast market for more than a year. More than 80 stations have said they plan to air the show, including 18 of the 25 bigger markets in the country.

The shows began airing in some markets within the past few weeks. Joining Ms. Brodie on the show are Bob Bussinger - her husband and the show's producer - and the couple's dog, Saki.

The half-hour-long episodes generally are taped at their Carmel. Highlands home, though occasionally shows are taped on location. Ms. Brodie is a graduate of the inaugural class of the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and has been executive chef at resorts in Carmel Valley including the Preserve at Rancho San Carlos, Stonepine Inn and Gardiner's Tennis Ranch. She also has been a guest chef at four- and five-star hotels in Europe. She and her husband operate a catering company, and she also gives classes.

Ms. Brodie has been a judge at the Castroville Artichoke Festival, whose major sponsor is Ocean Mist Farms. Salinas-based Mills Family Farms helped get the program underwritten on the local level. Ms. Brodie uses Mills Family Farms Wholeaves, which recently were judged to be the nation's best-of. class leaf lettuce for foodservice by the American Culinary Institute. Ms. Brodie uses the products of other area companies as well, including Quail Mountain Herbs, Pride of San Juan, Earthbound Farms and Monterey Mushrooms.
